On February 26th and 27th, both Mr. Pang (Corporate Advisor) and Dr. Lawrence (Principal Planning Advisor) had the privilege of attending the Borneo Energy Transition Conference (BETC) in Kuching, Sarawak. The conference brought together industry experts and thought leaders, who engaged in enlightening discussions and imparted their knowledge on how various sectors could play their parts in contributing to energy transition.

Here are some Key Takeaways from BETC:

• To expedite decarbonisation of transportation, buildings and industries, hydrogen must be adopted;

• Sarawak is to become a primary supplier of green hydrogen for downstream industries in Malaysia;

• Malaysia needs international support in the form of technology, financial backing and capacity building in the green energy economy;

• SEDC Energy has signed a Heads of Agreement (HOA) with Gentari for the joint development Sarawak H2 Hub in Bintulu, Sarawak, a partnership that would significantly advance the new energy industry in the region;

• To occupy 45,000 job positions in the emerging hydrogen economy by 2030, talent development is critical;

• The Rembus H2 Plant and Refuelling Facility will complement Kuching Urban Transportation System (KUTS)’s Autonomous Rapid Transit (ART) movement towards greener Sarawak.

By leveraging the extensive knowledge gained from the conference, we are optimistic that our organisation will be able to contribute to the hydrogen industry and cover gaps in the hydrogen supply chain. We aspire to establish a collaborative partnership with industry leaders in order to actualise Sarawak's ambition of becoming a green economy powerhouse.
